A
"singleton” for longer than she cares
to remember, Lisa Summers understands all too
well the desire to flee upon being asked the question
“Why aren’t you married?”
Far from the Desperate Housewife
that she aspired to be, Lisa was a Desperate HomeGirl,
spending most Saturday nights in front of the
TV. On the rare occasions that she actually had
a date, she would begin the evening with shiny
optimism only to have her hopes cruelly dashed
once again, as her imagined Prince Charming fell
short of expectations. And by “fell short,”
she does not mean discovering her date was 5’1”
instead of 5’11”, but discovering
that he was for instance, married instead of single.
By the time she had become a lawyer, her determined
quest to meet Mr. Right had led her to meet variations
of Mr. Wrong, Mr. Maybe, and Mr. Unavailable.
A sympathetic co-worker suggested that she join
the Armed Forces: “Why not? You’ll
have a secure job, you’ll be in the best
shape of your life, and you’ll be surrounded
by men!”
Lisa completed all of her exams for the Canadian
military, only to discover that she would be required
to take two six-month deployments overseas into
combat zones were she to continue this particular
career path. This is when she realized that no
potential husband was worth actually getting shot
at.
A trip to New Zealand allowed Lisa some time
for self-discovery. There, she realized that (1)
she will likely never be cured of her travel bug
and “settle down” as her parents hoped,
and (2) the single life does offer rewards and
happiness.
Inspired by her trip, Lisa decided to create
a novel whose main character reflects many of
her own personality traits, but whose journey
in life takes a very different path.
Lisa currently makes her home in southern Ontario where she works part-time as a lawyer. She is also a freelance contributor to the Toronto Star newspaper and a new relationship columnist for Chick Advisor.com.
Men Are Like Mocha Lattes is Lisa’s first
novel.
